Mata
Basically there are two main ways of doing a page layout. One is using tables and HTML. This makes lots of boxes that stuff then gets put into.

The new one is CSS. This creates specifically sized boxes with the ability to go on top of eachother. Quite groovy for some things but mostly it's just annoying.

Because my forums use tables for their layout then everything should just squash up, not layer on top of each-other and it's very weird that they're doing that. I've got no idea why it's happening either.

PS, don't forget to click the banners every few days please!
Moosh
Somehow I can see all the adverts again and to celebrate I've been clicking like crazy.

Did you work out why I couldn't see them and fix it or is this just random?
Greeneyes
Possibly something to do with the fact that these ones seem to be flash?
CommieBastard
Ack! Not just Flash - I just saw one of you horrible "You have 2 new messages waiting for you!" ones...
snooodlysnoosnoosnoodle
Only 2? I had one telling me I had 8, one telling me I'd won something, one telling me how to delete my history to hide the porn I've been looking at (implied by the picture) and some other annoying one telling me how to get rid of spam... whoo!

Mata goes away and BAM evil adverts run riot!
CommieBastard
One of the ads in rotation (on the sidebar) gives me a "The document contains no data" error. Not sure if anyone else is having this problem.
Greeneyes
I occasionally don't get one at all in the sidebar, just the header. Not sure if that's related.
Moosh
It's great fun with the "Knock out the boxer and get a free iPod" ones, because when I click, Firefox blocks the pop-up, so I can take out as much as I want on it.

But to make up for not getting Mata any money with those ones, I do click the others
markslut
There are a lot of Casino ads appearing now

Edit - and Spyware :S
CommieBastard
I'm also getting a lot of US-specific Ad Council stuff - they're supposed to be specific to the UK for me...
DarkInferno
On this page atm, I have a spyware ad at the top of the page, and the side ad has refused to load.

=o/

Edit: After posting that I got spyware on the right and Renault at the top, and while posting this I have spyware at the top and an american phone company on the right.
markslut
Oh no! I got a noisy Crazyfrog ad!! Arrrgh!

*I thought Jamster adverts were banned
froggle-rock
Hmm, an advert for Paddy's Poker at the top of the page opened up in the tab I was using, not a new tab/window. Which was inconvenient: do you know how much engery goes into hitting 'Back'? wink.gif tongue.gif
Mata
As you've, probably noticed, I've been away for a while so there may have been a change in my advertising status while I've been gone. I'm not on my home machine yet, but I'll check into all this as soon as possible. Keep the reports coming, cheers.
froggle-rock
And I'm getting American adverts (Save the Children US) as well as UK ones (NTL). Welcomish back, Mata?
Mata
I suspect that I've been put onto fast-click. They use tracking cookies to see who's looking at the banners and how many times they've seen them. The cookies do your machine no harm but they are a bit big-brother-ish, so I recommend using Ad-Aware regularly (as always) to skim them off before anyone gets anything useful on you.

I'l be able to confirm more when I get home, but I'll probably have several hundred emails waiting for me so it might take a couple of days.
Mata
Okay, here's what's going on:

My usual advertiser hasn't got enough business to provide adverts for my site, so the company that sorts this out for me has mixed in a load of cheaper adverts to cover us over for the month. Next month we'll be back to the normal ones.

This does have one advantage: it illustrates how much nicer the banners I've got at the moment are when compared to the cheapo ones. This is why people need to click them once or twice a day. It's the high click-rate that keeps the nice banner company using my site and keeps the rubbish ones off. August is a very slow month for advertising (everyone's on holiday so nobody spends the advertising budgets) but things should be back on track next month, just keep clicking the banners once or twice a day please!
porcelainwarrior
Yeah I'm getting US banners about 80% of the time - and "Operation Graduation" is starting to scare me o_0
Mata
I'm seeing all kinds of weird stuff. Still, some of it is quite amusing. Why would I, or my visitors, be interested in playing poker online? Still, I'm happy to click their banners occasionally and take their money smile.gif

Do people actually click the banners or is it just me?
Greeneyes
I click the banners. I even *shudder* accept their cookies.

...

I feel unclean.
porcelainwarrior
I click - that's why I've discovered the cheesy horror that is "Operation Graduation". Even though I'm in the UK and I've already graduated high school I have the oddest urge to go back blink.gif Subliminal messages anyone?
Mata
Don't bother accepting the cookies. I don't block 'em myself, but I wipe them out with a scan every few days anyway.

Cheers for clicking them. It's the only reason that I don't have even worse adverts on here.
Daria
I click on them! I am part of a music street team, and lots of the projects are for voting for things online, so I'm used to it...
markslut
*clicks them if interesting*
froggle-rock
I try to make sure I click the top and side one at least once every day I'm OL. Sometimes I don't click *gasp*, and some times I try to make up it wink.gif
CommieBastard
The US government just told me that my children need booster seats if they're under 4'11". Good to know.
Quoth(The Raven)
The only problem I have with the side banners is that sometimes it seems to screw with whatever music I'm playing, in the background (This is usually when I'm playing music stored on my harddrive, causing it to skip and distort...). I have found that right clicking on the ad, and lowering the quality setting to 'low', greatly reduces the distortion to the music, and doesn't seem to affect the ad, at all. But then, the second the screen changes, say, if I follow a link somewhere, the quality jumps back to high, again, and I'm back to where I started... *sigh* I don't mind the Amazon ads, at all...

Maybe I need a faster processor?

Nah, ad agencies need to get a clue and realise that graphics intensive ads, ads with music and flash ads in general just piss people off (well, me at least). I tend to refuse to buy products from companies with ads like that, that'll teach the evil badgers.

Has anyone else running Firefox on a Mac (OS X Tiger) had the crazy frog adverts (how I hate that frog!) crash their browser completely? Oh how I do not appreciate losing my place in however many sites I have open because of some bloody annoying frog!

*wanders off still ranting at top speed*
Mata
Try this:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/morei...numpg=10&id=436

It saves your browser tabs, even on crashes, so you can start from where you left off. Very handy sometimes.

Quoth, I've never had ads change the performance of a page to such a degree. I think I've seen some things around that can make 'low quality' the default settings for Flash. Have a Google and see what you can come up with. It does sound like a faster processor wouldn't go amiss though!
silvermoon
I clicked on the side banner, and instead of an ad, I got a window that just said HTT. Is that normal?
Mata
I've never had that happen to me, but I think I have had one with a dead link once before.

Said 4'9" to me. It occurs to me, there are two pictures with big blue crosses through clearly signifying that there are wrong ways of doing it, but the crosses are so thick, you can't acually see what's wrong about it! Also, why are they blue, surely red signifies danger!
Mata
Blue is the new red. Tampon adverts tell me this, so it must be true.
voices_in_my_head
Yes, Tampon Advertisments never lie...

Wow! That means ALL american dwarves have to use booster seats whenever they're in a car, cause you only need to be 4'11" to get into the Little People of American society (don't ask how I know that because it involves a story about Gague).

Also - I'll have you know that the Crazy Frog just scared the bejesus out of me! Did everyone else know that advert plays the tune? I thought I'd downloaded it instead of Coal Chamber by mistake ph34r.gif

I knew about that tune - and had thought Mata had requested no Jamster ads. There do seem to be a huge amount of online Poker Adverts at the moment (not just here but on a lot of other sites and in other media)
Mata
I have specifically requested no adverts that play music and my ads guy has generally done a good job at filtering them out. It's likely, this being Sunday, that it's gone online over the weekend and he's not trimmed it yet. Thanks for letting me know, I'll drop him a line.

Sorry- But that one is annoying the heck out of me.
Moosh
I'm seeing no ads at the moment, not even the 'Click Here' alt text. I thought they had stopped for some reason. I was seeing and clicking on them for the last about 4 weeks or so, but before that I saw occasional ones and the alt text.

Wow, that's really annoying, at the moment, I'm only seeing ones for Sky, which I already have....I'm still clicking them!
Mata
Cheers SPS smile.gif

VIMH, I've emailed my banner guy. He's normally pretty good at removing annoying banners so hopefully in a couple of hours that won't be seen on here again.

As always, if a banner is intensely annoying (big flashing images or noises) please let me know and I'll do my best to get it removed as fast as possible. Thanks!
voices_in_my_head
I hate to post in this thread again just to complain, but this ad's been annoying me:

...um...CLICK THE ADS!

Good lords. Sorry about that, I'll get it removed from the rotation.

Quick tip: press escape and .gif files stop playing.

I have a question about the banners. Does mata get money every time a banner is clicked?

Wouldn't be much point in having them if he didn't. wink.gif
Mata
Actually, I don't get any money for clicks directly; however, it does show that a site is worth advertising on if people click them occasionally.

These days I get money per-thousand page views. I get about 50p per thousand banner views, and currently this site is averaging about 5-6 thousand views per day. Clicking is good, because it makes my site look like a good place to advertise, but it doesn't directly result in more money for me.
michael1384
What happens if I keep refreshing the page?
Mata
I'm pretty sure that will slowly increase revenue, yes; however, considering that each page view works out at something like .01 pence, your time might be better spent telling people on other websites about the animations you like.

The new site, http://wwwstickscene.com , is designed to be fun while also creating a lot of page views, so if you want to spread a website link aroun then tell people that one... Or tell them both!
