The other night I was watching a tv show (Crime Watch) and was thinking what I wanted to do when i'm older. I thought along the lines of Mc Donalds employee but then I thought, Doorstop, it's perfect! I get to sit around all day and if someon says that i'm not working i can say i'm holding this door open!

But seriously I want to write boooks fror children (not ugly ones though, they can read a dictionary)

I was wondering what everyone else wanted to do, so I thought i'd ask

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO??
I_am_the_best
A teacher and a composer. Or maybe I'll have my own little concertino and we shall travel the world writing little pieces for us to play. I also plan on joining the army on a specialised job as a band member. But, I don't agree with some of the wars and if there aren't enough troops, we shall be needed to go into combat and I'm not prepared to fight in a war I don't agree with. But hopefully something musical.
froggle-rock
So you'd disalow 'ugly' chiildren from reading your books? What if you had 'ugly' children?

I'd like to do something arty with kids I think. Or at least that's what I have planned.
oscarhilton
there is always the dictionary.... always....

i want to be eather:

A Film director
or and animater
or a wed designer...

I REALLY want to be a director but ill more likely become the 3rd one.... but who knows...?

Mata has the perfect answer by having more or less all three smile.gif

I did want to join the navy as an air mechanic, but now I have started to go off the idea and dont really know what I want to do, I would like to travel though

I'm well on my to becoming a theatre director/producer. Or if I keep at this studying lark I can become a psychologist instead *shrug*.

Right now, reading this thread, it gives me the urge to become a hired killer through the internet.

yes.... me tooo.

I dont think i children are interested in the dictionary. The story trailes off at pages 156 and 278.... anyway all i know is my children WILL be ugly so i shant be buying and of YOUR books smile.gif

You know...a lot of us are actually "older" and to the point where we're actually doing what we planned to do, or are almost to that point.

That being said, though, I only have one more year of university left and I've no idea what I want to do with my life. I've thought about being a counsellor in the past, but I really don't know. I should figure that out at some point.
oscarhilton
she does make a point... but still some of us are still small and weak....

i cant wait to go to collage

I want to make movies. I want these movies to reflect how I really think and really feel. I want them to be funny when appropriate. I like the idea of making films that are vulgar, offensive and/or controversial. To clarify: Vulgar, to me, means bad words and content. This may include blood, gore and violence. I _hate_ the idea of having nudity in my movies. It's too cheap, even for me. Offensive is relative, but I'd like to entertain in a very blunt manner that many people wouldn't like. Same goes for controversial. I like the idea of rocking the boat a little. I don't see myself as a guy who will take the blinders off of the whole world, but I'd like to think I'll make someone think.

I like the idea of doing comedies, but I'd love to do an action film based on the intellectual properties co-owned by me and my brother (particularly the post-Apocalyptic The Resistance) or an animated movie with Oriku Ronin, the Skateboard Samurai (sort of Princess Mononoke style with skating, in-lining, BMXing and bad words).

I don't get where you're coming from on this. You want your film to be perfect according to your philosophy yet you'd stunt your creativity if it meant avoiding having nudity in the film. Because clearly nudity can never be artistic or appropriate. Look at how many pieces of art involve nudity, are they cheap?

Sure, by all means don't turn your films into cheap porn but don't comprimise your creativity for some halfwitted generalisation.

In addition to this how is nudity less cheap than what you said about wanting to be vulglar, offensive and violent? If it makes a point then it's all good - art should not be judged against morals - but if it's purely there to stir up controversy then that's just as cheap as you say using nudity in your film would be.

Back on topic, my top 2 career areas would be:

- Games Programming (I've been programming for years, am good at it and still enjoy it. I enjoy games too and have plenty of ideas. I'm really into the idea of indy games design with a small independant team. Games companies at the moment run their employees into the ground and I would hate to be part of the corporate media machine and all that horrible cliche but occasionally true crap.)
- Web Design (Which I have done before and have plenty of experience in. Probably freelance. The only downer is that bringing other peoples ideas to life isn't anywhere neas as fun as working on your own ideas.)
Mata
To begin with I wanted to be a deep-sea diver. Then I read about giant squid and that put me off that idea.

Then for a long time I wanted to work for Jim Henson or maybe to be an animator. Then Jim Henson died.

Then I wanted to work for Brian Henson. Then I realised that the chances of that happening were remote at best, so I tried to get into animation.

Then I realised I couldn't really afford or get the equipment.

Then I was a bit stuck.

Then computers began to catch up with being able to do all the things I'd always thought that they should be able to do, and I became an animator after all. Hurrah!

The PhD in cyberpunk is just for bonus points from my inner-15-year-old.

Then we learn the lesson that over generalisation gets you a long angry rant or worse. smile.gif

Edited my above post to make it more on topic.

No, he wants to make films where people slash each other to bits with the aid of screamed profanity, just so that boys/men will want to watch it.

EDIT: I don't really know what I'm going to do immediately after leaving university. I'll probably do a Masters if I can after my BA, but beyond that, I don't know. Ultimately, I'd like to get properly involved in politics at some level, but I'd perhaps like to go into journalism before then. To be honest, I take whatever opportunities present themselves, so I could end up as any number of things.

That's a bit stereotypical. I'm a girl and I enjoy lots of violence as do many of my friends (I think).

I think that if I want to be a teacher and a composer/musician at the same time, I can be a piano teacher! smile.gif

Ooo! Can I be a Pirate when I grow up? I want to sail the 7 sea with my trusty Wench at my side!

Actually you're in a unique position. You can choose what job you really want to do and go for it... In which case I'll make sure to prime the cannons next time I go sailing (which, on the statistical evidence of my life so far, will probably not be for a fair while yet).

I want to dance... forever. Heh. Or forensic psychologist. ^.^ I'm majoring in psychology and dance. Or maybe be something scandalous. With those two areas, I'm bound to be able to do anything risky and risque with some added computer skills. ^.^

Research. I want to go into AI research and create the next generation of thinking machines. I want people to go "Man, that novander, eh? What a guy. Sure made my life easier." And then I want to build a robot army to conquer the world for me.

I suppose I will end up getting a PhD and teaching (social anthropology or German), preferrably at the college level. Although I'd like to do some sort of field work before that.

Ideally, though, I'd like to get a PhD in something hopelessly obscure, go forth and live alone in the woods writing angry political essays and eating leaves. tongue.gif
PsychWardMike
Blow, hand, they're all good to me!
PsychWardMike
But in all seriousness, folks, I'd love to be a writer and music composer. I fully intend on double majoring in the two in college and eventually working in the film/Broadway/video game industry. Such fun shall my life be!

(I hear a starving artist is a great way to lose weight!)

Two things I wanted to be when I was *younger* 1) A teacher- Been there done that 2) A singer. This is my ultimate dream and if I have to wait until I'm 93 I will do this. I'm currently 24 so life is becoming stopped
Jaq
I've always wanted to be a teacher, though there were a few shaky points when I was 8 and 9 where I considered massuese, psychiatrist and lawyer. Eventually I came back to 'teacher', but those two years were a very scary point in my life tongue.gif

Am teaching now and I'll have to stop it for at least another year to go back to school so I'm not really looking forward to being a student again.

I really love teaching, it's challenging, interesting and I have alot of fun with the kids. For example: at work today I had a perfectly good excuse to draw a huge pirate on the whiteboard. This is not something you can do in most respectable professions and still get paid for it. yarr

Well, I have a job which I hate and the chances of me considering a career change at this point are low.

So, if I could pick my ideal job - I would like to own an Animal Shelter. Simple as. Somewhere safe for animals that have been abandoned or mistreated in the past. This would involve many acres of land and an awful lot of money so I'm thinking a lottery win.

And that's quite a girlie thing to want to do when you grow up...

What do I want to be when I grow up?

Independantly wealthy preferably. This work malarky ain't all it's cracked up to be.

Well I'm on my way to becoming a graphic designer which is what I want to do. I'm enjoying learning more about web design and want to keep that as something else I can do for people, and now that I've learned a little about flash and plan to take more time learning about it, it makes my portfolio more diverse.

Spefically the best job I could think of is designing CD covers for nothing records. I just want to tell people that, "I work for nothing." Hehe.

Okay, to explain...

Nudity: Yes, I don't want cheap nudity. Definately. However, I'm not a big fan of nudity to begin with. When it comes about in movies, I often roll my eyes (unless it really effin' means something). Artistically, I think I can express myself just as well without it. That's just me, though, and I have seen flicks with nudity that are still artistic. I mean, if I were to be doing something along the lines of Amistad my view on said matter would be different, but I don't plan on it.

Vulgarity: They say "write what you know." What I know is standing around, smoking, contemplating life with my friends, overanalyzing situations and bitching about media, all while exhausting our mental vocabulary and swearing like sailors. Swearing, to me, can be an art. There is such a thing as too much vulgarity, however, "bad" words can be used for emphasis and illustration of one's seriousness.

Controvery: This is pointing out how you're not allowed to make movies that make strike chords with people anymore (Team America), particularly if they are at all religious (Dogma, The Passion of the Christ). My deal is that a lot of the intellectual properties my brother and I share have, to some degree or another, religious content. The Demonhunter property involves vampires, angels, omens, demons and Ressurection. THe Heretic property follows a Christian mage and his two students through realms of fantasy (long story short: 144 dimensions, most fantasy-ish). Another property of ours flat-out indicts all governments as a source of control and oppression.

Offensive: I've been known to offend without trying to, so if my flicks follow my character, someone's gonna get pissed.

Violence: Not glorified violence. VIolence that's harsh, gory and illustrates the true nature of violence. The Resistance is about a war after fascism takes over half the world. People get shot, stabbed and blown up and die. It's not meant to show valor or be cool. If anything, I want it to be sobering. THink of the violence in Saving Private RYan. Johnathan Cruz, another intellectual property, hates his life, hates vampires and want all involved to die. I don't want to illustrate his fight against vampires to be "cool" or Blade-ish. In the end, I'd like to show the harsh realism and tragedy of violence.

So yeah.

I want to be a marine biologist. I want to do the opposite of Mata, and become a research scientist (no needless killing involved...) so I can study cephallopods like squid (giant and not-so-giant) and octopuss.
They are just really cool- they have 9 brains, three hearts, a beak which they can bite off your hand with, a jet propulsion system, and can squeeze through a hole less than two inches in diameter.
I'd like to see YOU do that!
And I have recently been reading The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham which has been fuelling my passion... blink.gif

Hard to say really, I suppose it'd be nice to do something to do with music, not writing or playing you understand, maybe on the production side, maybe something to do with live music, but making a career out of that isn't exactly easy and I'm not really sold on the idea enough to actually chase it.
In short, I don't know, there's nothing really I feel I'm good at, enjoy and could potentially make a living out of.

Err... And which part of this made you think 'that's great, I'd love to be close to one of them?' Personally I think that if any creature is going to evoke primal fear in a person then it really should be the giant squid. Octopii aren't too great either, they're like squid but live in more shallow water and they're actually really smart... They're coming to get us!

I get shocked whenever I touch plugs or switches. Every single time. Unfortunately I don't think there's much of a career in that.

Whatever I do will be to support my artistic "habits". Art, photography, writing; the kind of things I love but don't realistically suppose I could earn a living off of. (Eternal pessimist.)

I want to be a movie levelcostume designer but mostly do quirky interesting movies like velvet goldmine, or I could design custom clothes for nifty people.

Essentially I want to do somthing with cosuming where I'll be able to live a decent not penny pinching life while expanding myself style wise.

I would just -love- going into the design business or into make-up arts or something for something like Cirque du Soliel. I think that would be like, the ultimate career though, for me. Just... working with that group would be amazing in itself. Even if I was just typing things or getting water, I don't think I'd care that much, heh. But really, anything decent in dance, singing, or psychology would suit me quite well.

They do evoke that primal fear, but also the primal curiosity, and natural feeling of "lemmingness". Have you read "The Kraken Wakes" Mata? You should do... especialy if you think they are comming to get us... It might make you more parranoid though...

Hmm... maybe a teacher or a journalist. I try not to plan that far ahead as nothing happens the way you think it will...

I'd like to make an impact on peoples lives, and in a good way. Through educating them preferably, even if it's just reporting on random things from the armpit of the world.

Actually, you can make a good amount of mony as an electritian, plumber, carpenter or any profession in construction. Imagine the money you could get with you and a few guys plumbing an entire subdivision! I've done it off and on for about eight years and have made a good amount of money (I did tile every summer for three years and ALWAYS had money). If you're willing to work, then construction can pay off.

THe same goes for working as a mechanic, be it on cars or otherwise. I worked in a shop for a while and man, those guys made the bucks. It was literally from seven or eight AM to five or six in the evening, but those hours sure added up. That and there are always machines needing to be worked on so you'll always have work to do.

So yeah, if you'd like a good career, these may be good for you.

Probably a University Lecturer or a Researcher, Maths or Physics.

I just want to teach but don't fancy coming into daily contact with little kids or 12-16 year olds. They're annoying little beggers (trust me, I am one) and I'd rather not spend the rest of my life with them. But yeah, Uni could be good.

That's exactly what I'm looking into. I want to be a college professor, mainly because I don't like really little kids, I don't like preteens (bleh) and I can't stand the upity, self righteous morons I go to school with now. I figure in college, at least, I have a very concentrated group of kids-- a group of kids that wants to be there, and, perhaps more importantly, are paying me beaucoup bucks to be there. Plus, teaching literature is such the slacker's job... if you're into that sort of thing. You're paid to read and then teach theories of literature! How amazing is that?! Also, I'd have time to write, which is what I'd do if I thought I wouldn't live off potatoes for the rest of my life doing so.

I wouldn't be a plumber simply because, well, EWWWWW! GROSSSS!!!!!! ICKY!!!!!! I don't care how much you pay me! EEEEEEUUUUUUUWWWWWWWWBLLLEEEEEHHH!!!! I refuse to deal with human excretion!

Octopuses or Octopodes, but not Octopii. Dictionary.com is actually wrong on this one. Octopus is a greek word, not latin, so it doesn't use the -i plural.

Sorry, pet peeve of mine. Also, Octopodes are fascinating creatures. So intelligent. So graceful when they want to be, so ugly when they don't. But squid? Sure the odd giant squid raises some mythic terror, but really they're just dumb octopuses. Where's the fun in that?

I'm going too far off-topic, so I'll just stop here now.
