That's how my mom made the vines curve. Only, she used grape vines, which turned out to be pretty heavy. Daria, (or anyone else who might know the answer) Do you know how light willow would be?
Daria
Um... as a feather? I don't know biggrin.gif To what are you comparing it to? And how much? And how long it each bit?

Imagine a bit of willow, just off a tree, about 2 m long.

Now add on another half weight, and I think you'd be about there...
Obviously depends on the girth, length, density etc etc
Kitty
I dont know when the last time I saw a willow tree was.... =( if I knew where one was I'd go cut a branch or two off but I havent seen one around in forever....

I do know that some people use willow to make farthingales (hoop skirts) so that means it must be fairly light (fairly....) If only I could find some unsure.gif

Edit: Now that I think about it, a costume made out of mostly natural material would be kind of awesome. Wings made from twigs and maybe preserved rose petals.... I dunno what I'd do with the acctual body of the costume though....
Daria
Where do you live in America, and how much would it cost to FedEx you some British Willow? biggrin.gif

As part of my art GCSE at High Scool, I made a load of jewelry from wire, fabric and petals. Most of them fell off but if you are willing to re-do some of your work, it gives a very good result. Also, the pieces I made were displayed, bumped about, moved, handled and picked at by people, so I am sure putting them onto your costume would be fine.

Have you considered making the main part of the costume out of a soft mulsin or thin linen as it would give it the same sort of "waif"-like style, but at the same time be durable and easy to work with. Not to mention cheap biggrin.gif
Kitty
I havent thought of that tongue.gif No. But its a good idea. I'd so something amy-brown ish but with leaves and such attatched to it.

Did you use dried petals and such on your jewlry?

And I live in Virginia, a little south of D.C.... I dunno how much fedex prices are so I cant tell you about fed-ex prices tongue.gif but I dont think it would be too bad? Since willow is light and all.... lol
Daria
Heh heh heh.. But is it internationaly light? biggrin.gif

I used dried rose petals, and dried whole forget-me-nots. I would post some pictures of them (I made a necklace, a fairy-like tiarra and a ring using petals, leaf skeletons, fabric and wire) but my digi cam has run out of juice.
I'll find it some new batteries and post some pics!
Kitty
I have no idea how you'd make stuff like that! A ring??

So confused.... sad.gif

Did you just let your leaves and things to dry or did you put them in silica gel?
Daria
I pressed them in printer paper, sandwiched between kitchen paper.

The jewelry I made wasn't proper pieces, it was just florists' wire in a circle, with velvet or silk wrapped around it, and petals sewn/ glued on.

S'not that difficult smile.gif
Kitty
Okay that doesnt sound hard to do tongue.gif I could manage that. Once I collect foliage....

Edit: Her hat, its perfect

Untill I saw that I thought I wouldnt go to homecoming cuz If I go I want to look super awesome.... but a hat like that would be absolutley _perfect_. After a little researching I've found out that the style I want is called a Doll Hat, and after more looking I gave up on finding one mad.gif

Our theme is Brun-opoly. (bruins is our school mascot....)

And I'd look like a female version of the Monopoly guy if I got my way.... =(
Cath Sparrow
Yes that's a gorgeous hat but I think unfortunatly to get what you want or similar will cost a fortune. *brainstorm attack* Is there anywhere near you that does hat hire they might have something or you could take a copy of the picture down with you and if they dont have something similar they might be able to point you in the right direction and it'd be a whole hell of a lot cheaper than buying it.
Kitty
Sadly all the hatstores around here have moved out =( I found something on ebay for about 30 bucks which would be suitable but I dont feel like spending 30 bucks on it cuz its not exactly what I want. Heeehh. I think I'll just refrain from having a hat =( Or get a normal satin top hat which I can get for about $10 on ebay (YAY!)
Daria
Yay for hats!
$10 for a hat is uber cheap! Even if you only use it once, you can re-sell it and make enough to get _the_ hat biggrin.gif
Kitty
Hat

This is the only thing I could find close to what I'm looking for. Other than that Nice satin top hat

I'm in alot of debt to my parents right now though so I'm not sure if this is happening.... blink.gif sad.gif
Daria
sad.gif e-bay scares me.
If it didn't, I think I would use it way too much, so perhaps it is a good thing biggrin.gif
Kitty
Buying things on the 'net period scares me tongue.gif

I've decided not to go to homecoming. For a few reasons, but mainly that I've never really liked dances, and so many people want me to go with them I feel bad putting one down for another.

But I'm still going to make the awesome outfit so no worries there tongue.gif happy.gif It just might not be done as soon as expected
Cath Sparrow
Dont hate me I know you can't afford it but look what I found.
Hat
Kitty
*drools over it for the next few hours*
*looks at collection of pennies*

=( I can get a job in about 4 months.... Heehh
Aria
Hey, K!zzy, quick question. Any tips for absolute newbie wing makers? Yours are incredibly gorgeous, and since Halloween's coming up, I thought I might give it a try.
Kitty
^^ Lots of wire and hotglue. Check your hardware store for some steel wire. Nothing copper. 22 gauge and up will work, but I suggest something thicker....

If you have a soldering iron laying around it works well to clean up the edges. Once you hotglue your fabric to your wire frame you'll have to cut the sides down, but it will still look uneven and lumpy.... take a soldering iron to the edges, it'll melt down the hotglue and fabric (unless its something natural in that case it'll burn it....) make sure to be in a ventalated area and not to breathe in the fumes o.0;

Always try and make sure your fabric is flat so its not wrinkley.... and make sure your frame doesnt wobble/warp when held upright. If it does you'll either need stronger wire or thicker wire.....

Cant find thicker wire? Take a length of wire, double it up and wrap one end around something sturdy. Take the ends and put them into the drill bit part of your power drill and let it run till it twists nice and tight tongue.gif

If you're going to do wire ones then just do the frame and have fun happy.gif Make sure your wires wont move around on the frame too much.... Otherwise they could potentially slip off and that wouldnt be fun....

If you have any specific questions just ask me tongue.gif

And if you want to spell my username easier you can just type it kitty.... laugh.gif
voices_in_my_head
This is random and doesn't have anything to do with hats or faerie wings, But I've Always read your username as kizzy, because the "77" part is underlined and makes it look like a z...

(I warned you that it was random)
Kitty
Aww.... its alright. I'd probably do the same thing....

I really hate my username x.x but I couldnt think of anything at the time and I wasnt really planning on posting here alot.

But now that I think about it it really does look like kizzy! laugh.gif thats funny.... But if anyone knows leet its 7's are usually t's.... *hates leet*
Mata
I can change it to 'Kitty' for you if you would like?
Aria

Me too! ... This is why I typed it badly above. And thanks for the tips, Kitty. tongue.gif
Kitty
Heh, no problem Aria

And Mata that'd be awesome if you changed it for me! Do you think it'd confuse people?....
Mata
I guess we'll find out won't we? smile.gif
Kitty
I'll make sure to change my avatar and sig when I get home! 0.0; lol

Thanks much Mata tongue.gif Logging in was easy without all the numbers and crap

Heh, now its pretty much all different.... I like my new sig happy.gif
Mata
Yes, that's defintely more 'you' I think.

Where's the new avatar from?

(Feel free to take this back on topic any time you fancy but I figured it would be easy to have a small OT conversation here.)
Kitty
This thread hasnt been on topic for a while tongue.gif Its not really about faerie wings anymore.

The avatar is a picture I took of something I drew on my hand in science class one day. Its by far my most favorite picture of anything I've ever done before.... I love the angle of the camera and the way my fist is, and how the rope tied around my wrist looks perfectly rope-y. And the jacket cuff just showing adds a nice touch happy.gif

The lil symbol has since become decoration for my journal and something that just sort of symbolizes me and my thoughts.... Heh happy.gif

The sig is just because I wore super lime green tights today and they glowed almost radioactively under the school's florescent lights. I thought of the quote "brigthening the world one pair of colored tights at a time" randomly and kind of because people kept staring at me weird....

<.<
>.>

happy.gif
Mata
Yes, that is a very good picture. I thought it was by a professional photographer. I like the slight darkening around the edges.
Kitty
happy.gif *feels special* Professional photographer!?

laugh.gif

Acctually now that you mention it.... I've gotten my parents to agree to get me out of German class and into photography. The funny thing is dad would NOT budge on his decision to keep me in German untill I told him that I could get into Photography without changing the rest of my schedule tongue.gif

He got excited about that.... I love photography happy.gif
voices_in_my_head
ohmy.gif you drew that?

I have a hard enough time writing homework assignments on the back of my hand, but that is just... wow.

Very cool photo too, though. I imagene Photography will be alot more fun than learning German!
Kitty
German would be fun if I had a teacher that did something other than say "Do assignments 1-50 in the next fifteen minutes"

I exaggerate but you get my point....

Anyhow yea ^^; Science class is good for creating things. I dont know how that drawing ended up looking so good but it did and I'm proud happy.gif Recently I've made chainmail chains in science.... I'll post a picture as soon as I find someone to take a picture
Cath Sparrow
I think the topic went out the window ages ago and the thread has just turned into our little creative group. tongue.gif
The new Av looks really cool. You might want to change your member desription as well biggrin.gif and the sig. definately seems aproriate.
Chainmails addictive isn't it. Wyvern had someone asking her to teach them the other day when she was at work. biggrin.gif
Kitty
Definatley will change member description. Once I figure out what to put there tongue.gif

I have people asking me to make chainmail for them, but no one really wants to learn.... blink.gif
Cath Sparrow
I've had both. biggrin.gif
Kitty
I guess I have lazy friends!

My parents like it, which is cool. They get all smiley when they see it happy.gif
Kitty
I present a challange!!!

It gets rather chilly at the end of Faire.... Faerie needs winter clothes!!
Theres only one weekend left and I think I'm going in civvies (civilian clothing) so it wont be for this year. But I'll definatley be working on clothes for next year.... Also my theme is faerie-pirate so I'll need some piratical (teehee) stuff incorporated.... But warmth+fae is mostly my problem, I'll work in pirate later....

Any ideas? Most anything I come up with is more peasant-y and not fae.... I can always do pirate-y pants under skirts, but its still ruining alot of the faerie-esque ness

Also, my card (every pirate has a card....) is 7 of diamonds. I might end up embroidering a 7 of diamonds something or other onto some of my clothing.... my only problem is I dont know how to draw it blink.gif 7 diamonds all mingled together is messy, I've discovered, and also a bit busy.... I'm trying to make something cool that represents a 7 of dimonds and sort of fae-ish. I was thinking a seven and a diamond next to it with some sort of fae-design in the diamond....

Having trouble sad.gif I'm artistically challanged today

But I have figured out what my fae-rat (faerie/pirate....) symbol will be.... instead of a skull and crossbones it will be a skull and wings! I have yet to draw it all cool though....
Daria
How about just using thicker fabrics for the main body of the costume? You could incorporate the pirate into it by having some big billowy sleeves on a shirt, which would mean you could still have a corset/ bodice type faery thing.

I am having a few more ideas, but I am uber tired and finding it difficult to type coherantly smile.gif
I'll post them when I can.
Kitty
I could have an optional wool lining.... but I really cant go much thicker with alot of it....

Big sleeves are a good idea. I need to practice making shirts because I havent yet.... But just sleeves isnt gunna cut it sometimes tongue.gif I'm thinking of a pirate coat in faerie colors, I can get stuff embroidered on to it too.... but I'm also too tired to keep typing....

*zzzz*
Kitty
I've decided on making a pirate-esque coat, lined, with an extra removable wool/fleece lining for warmth when its super cold. I'm also going to invest in a pair of velvet tights and probably long johns ( biggrin.gif ) to wear underneath for the super wintery weather. I'll have some skin tight long sleeve things for arm warmth and I'm going to figure out how to make gloves.

The only thing I need to figure out is the design I'll be putting onto the coat.... I want embroidered pockets and such. Theres an example of what I'm basing it off of, the woman that made his coat is going to be helping me with mine happy.gif

As for the video I promised you, I only have a days worth of footage, and I didnt go around taping the whole day so the video will probably only be a few minutes long, which is disappointing because I wanted alot more footage.... But my parents wouldnt let me go as often as I wanted to....This weekend is the last weekend and I dont want to be burdened with carrying around a camera dry.gif

Alrighty! I'll be editing my footage soon, once my dad lets me....

Edit: This will probably something of what my 'symbol' looks like.... tongue.gif
Cath Sparrow
Mmmmm..... frock coats..... Part way through making one myself this ones a trial run and I've decided I need to alter part of it all ready.

Glove pattern for you reasonably easy to make just a bit fiddly
Gloves
Mata
I've always liked the look of frock coats, but I'm not sure if they'd suit me. I think men need a certain look to get away with them, and I just don't think it would fit with the rest of my style.

We could always find out tongue.gif

Want me to make you one? tongue.gif

In other news.... I just walked in the door.... after GWAR then three hours of sleep, then 13 hours of running around and such....

I ache so much sad.gif
voices_in_my_head
I did this version of your pirate-fairy symbol for fun:

It sounds like you need to, oh, I don't know... Sleep, maybe? laugh.gif
Kitty
I slept x.x; And its 5:50 in the friggin morning and I have to LEAVE already.... I still hurt =( Cant stay home....

Your design is cool though happy.gif Its very pretty. In fact, its now my desktop wallpaper.... Hehe
Mata
I've stumbled on a place selling reasonably-priced tiny top hats:

http://lolalog.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/

eBay shop here:

Apparently they do requests too!

Gadzooks, Kitty! You go to the Maryland Ren Fest? I go to the Maryland Ren Fest! Woah... it's such a very small world... blink.gif Good job representin'.

Sorry, I haven't been on for a while, but I was following the creation of your wings before I took my hiatus, and the thread has grown, my dear. I can't see the final product because of my (ludicrous) parental controls >_> but I'll see them at the library. I'm sure you look gorgeous happy.gif I bought $200+ worth of bodice and dress cause I was far too lazy to make my own, so I'm very proud of you.

Go on with your talking, people...

Aww happy.gif Thanks Mata. They're awesomely pretty! I dont like the fact that the seams are very obvious though.... Which leads me to wonder why I never see seams in other hats.... Hmm. Well thats curious, maybe I'm just not observant.... I might get one, I'm not sure. I havent been sewing lately due to my lack of space (10x10 foot room, a bed, a desk, a couch, 3 bookshelves.... Its just not enough space anymore) So I dont have an outfit to wear it with.... ONce I get a place for my machine again I'll whip something up and probably go buy one of thoes hats happy.gif

ARC Goes to the Maryland RenFest?!?! You didnt see me?? =( Do you ever hang out around the blowguns stand? Where'd you get your bodice and dress from? We should meet up next year! *extatic*
Mata
I think that top hats are usually made using some sort of silk spinning process, so they come out in one piece. Clever stuff, but not very practical for people without the specialised tools!
Kitty
Hmm.... You might be right Mata, I really cant see how else they'd do it.

Anyone know the difference between silk and satin?

The last of Faire's pictures (except mine.... which I only have maybe 2 of and they're not developed as of yet....) Are to be found here: http://www.lachancefamily.net/mdrf/

These are taken by my friend Lynne's (or dungeon bait....) mum. happy.gif

Also about that video I promised, my dad said I'm not allowed to edit it till he edits something he wants to.... which will take till around christmas.... erg.
