Snugglebum the Destroyer
Really, I'm in a whole mid - twenties angst stage. It's getting on my tits.

I suspect it's because I'm having another birthday this month. Buggers keep turning up every year and it's never good news.

Anyone else get a bit 'flakey' on the run up to a birthday? Ohh, and please rate. It gives my life purpose. *noddles*

Note: I swear this is not a piss take out of the general tone of the forum. Probably.
little_bear
I'm not emo.

I never would Sir Bear! I'm shocked and more then a little disappointed in you, that you would ever, ever think I'd stoop to such diabolical levels!

I have every right to be as EMO as I want cause in 28 days I will no longer be in my 20's so neerr! *wander off to sulk and write her LJ*

Just emo enough to make a poll about it. wink.gif

I keep posting on Pee's account, 'cause he's not logged out. But this post is full of Kims.

You're not emo, but Whitney is cheap...like crack.

Me? I'm emo, I just keep it to myself, like any of you'd care anyway. laugh.gif
Fallen Element
I'm probably somewhere between "Too emo" and "Just the right amount". . . Depends on how much eyeliner I've got on - or, y'know, how drunk I am!

S'not a bad thing though. . . Is it? blink.gif

Fal xXx
Calantyr
Meh. Sometimes I have shakey moments, but on the whole I'm too arrogant to indulge in self-pity.
Plus, I hate emo hair. Get a damned haircut. Note, I am special and so immune to this rule.

Or to quote Fallen Element:
QUOTE
or, y'know, how drunk I am!

Yeah, I'll go with that. Ten pints or hard cider and I'll talk enough wank to drown in.

The Snuggs isn't emo. She doesn't write enough bad poetry or own bags full of wrist bands.
artist.unknown
Oh, no, not me. I'm a hippy. That's idealistic angst. Totally different. I mean, first of all, my wrist bands are hemp. tongue.gif

Now as for you, Snuggs, the Angel Sanctuary avatar makes you a bit iffy, but on the whole I think you've used too many exclamation marks in this thread to qualify. ^^
bryden42
could someone please tell me what the difference between emo and goth is? I'm getting really confuseled. I was kind of part of the goth movement so know a little about it, i have no idea what emo is but keep hearing about it, and everything i hear just sounds like a more technology savvy version of goth?

I'm not Emo.

I have a girly apparance but a pessimistic outlook on the world.

I know no label for myself, and do not care for one or about labels, everyone is unique in their own way.

I don't really think I'm emo. I don't think that you are either. I like your post, and now I must run.

Goes like this for me: weeks of optimism, and all this static negativity builds up on the surface of my skin. Then suddenly discharge it all in a emo session.
Then spend a while apologising to my loved ones.

Rinse.. and repeat!
bryden42
thanks all for the definitions.
so basicaly it is, like rock and roll, mod, punk, goth, rock, metal, new romantics, rap, Indie and anything with the prefix Nu, a label for teen angst bulls**t and the music of the day.
that clears it all up.
arachnidoc17
Aagh! The EMO! It burrrrrns ussss!

Noooo the emos!!

*turns up the rock*
Kitty
The word 'emo' is used too often today. And mostly its used to tease people with quotes like "So and so is so f****** emo, I hate it"

Its gets rather annoying after a while sad.gif

As for me, I have a pretty happy outlook on life happy.gif

And eyeliner is always good....

i hate it when people take the p*ss out of emo's. so what if we are? why does it concern you so much anyway? just because your face is so stiff with all that make-up you wear, you sl*t. really, it's always those kind of people that take the mick out of emo's, isnt it? the ones who don't actually understand.
and so what if i hit them for it? i dont want people dissing me.
they deserve a good slap.
i mean, it's not as if im even completely emo. im like...half emo, half 'other'. i don't know what the other half of me is. just...me i guess. \im not completely emo coz i dont cut myself. i just cover my emotions up. and write songs and stuff. and dont tell anyone i feel completely sh*t. well, it worked through my parents seperation and its still working now. coz no one notices.

THe only thing I find amusing about emos is when they say, "We're not 'emo', we're 'Emotional Hardcore'."

That was hilarious.

And yes indeed - I have it on good authority that Wookie is both a sl*t and wears far too much make - up. wink.gif

Right.

Mysteriously, a dim view is generally taken by the mod team of personal attacks on thirteen-year-olds. Can't imagine why.

My;heart;bleeds, like SPS says, perhaps tone down your language a bit and try and be less confrontational? You'll only invite unpleasantness, which is something we try to avoid.

I'll put this in simple terms:

I cannot believe the stupidity of that post on so many levels. If I ever see you post something like that again I will happily bar you.

You have absolutely no idea whether MHB is a stable teenager or looking for an excuse to do something stupid. We've already had one needless suicide of a person on my forums, and I see absolutely no humour whatsoever in jokingly encouraging a person to begin self harm. Get some damn perspective on things.

That is exactly the kind of idiotic lack of thoughtfulness for the feelings (and potential) stability of other people that irritates the hell of out me and you, and several others, have already been requested to stop taking the piss out of kids in the Personal Concerns section but it should apply generally. Use some common sense.

Yes, MHB's post was too confrontational, but yours was so far over the line that you lost sight of it altogether. I'm bloody pissed off with you.
Forever Unknown
So she calls Wookiee:

QUOTE (My;heart;bleeds @ Oct 15 2005, 02:37 PM)
just because your face is so stiff with all that make-up you wear, you sl*t. really

And we're supposed to smile politely and not respond?

She starts the personal attacks, and gets a "oh, never mind, she's only thirteen". Others retort because, quite simply, her post was rude and somewhat silly, and they get the bitch-slapping from all Hell?

While Wookiee isn't much in the habit of playing nice, and yeah, maybe over the line, I keep seeing displays of six of one, half a dozen of the other, on these forums of late.

Gah.
CommieBastard
FU: I never got the impression she was referring to any one person in particular, let alone Wookiee (which would be extremely weird, as Wookiee's icon is of a bloke).

edit to add:

QUOTE
And we're supposed to smile politely and not respond?

Yes, please. That would help.
Mata
I also read it to be talking in general and not at Wookie.

Also, Wookie is older and big enough to take such things lightly, even if they were directed at him; it's no justification for recommending self-harm to a thirteen year old.
Wookiee
QUOTE (Commie)

Mysteriously, I didn't think to check a user profile before I retorted to a rude, spazzy little 'net goblin. If there's shit being slung, then I'm all for that, and I don't see what age has to with anything in this context.

QUOTE (Mata @ Oct 16 2005, 12:40 PM)

And there's plenty of forums where that's acceptable behaviour. Try Newgrounds.
Mata
I'm trying to run a forum where people have a vast range of ages and personal ability to respond to confrontation. That is the perspective. You can read things and know that they are jokes, but some people will not always do so.

There is still no excuse for suggesting self-harm. Yes, MHB's post was confrontational. Snuggs responded in a reasonable manner to it, as did SPS. If you have a problem with a post then report it to the mods, don't tell the person to start cutting themself.

I love how you assume they are actually thirteen.
CommieBastard
LB: Um, it's not much of a stretch to assume she's telling the truth about her age, is it?
Mata
Whether she's telling the truth or not, although the writing style suggests that she is, it's still not mature to write to anyone that you don't know anything about that they should start cutting themself.

All I'm hoping for is that Wookie will say 'yes, sorry, that was taking things too far.' I wouldn't expect my friends to start talking like that at the pub, so I don't expect them to act that way online. If they started making jokes like that in conversation I'd probably say that it was in bad taste, but on a forum it's just irresponsible. Is it so much to expect that a person might apologise for telling someone else to start self-harming, or at least accept that they have over-stepped the mark? I don't think so. I apologise when I do it, and I have apologised in the past for my mistakes. We all make them and it's just simple responible and civil behaviour to say sorry when we do.
Snugglebum the Destroyer
Well, I started this thread so I feel somewhat responsible as to it's direction.

This whole thread was started in Daft so that certain people who may be getting a little frustrated with the Personal Concerns 'emoness', can have a bit of tongue in cheek banter and vent WITHOUT hijacking aformentioned forum - which is really easily done.

I think this got totally out of hand - knowing Wookiee, I know for a fact that his sense of humour may not be appreciated by all but it was meant in jest.

To be absolutely fair, look at this particular forum description:

QUOTE
The place for non-serious chat. If you fancy increasing your post count without annoying people this is the place to be! Suggested content: jokes, links, daft threads when you want to say something/anything

Wookiee wanted to say something, so he did. The forum description suggests that he shouldn't be penalised for that? Of course, that's if we're going to be pedantic about it.

Lastly - if someone considers themselves old enough to make a personal attack, using a word that I feel is offensive, then I think it's fair that they should expect some sort of reprisal.

And on topic - this is not helping my mental situation at all. I feel the need to listen to something whiney and I hear there's a poetry workshop around the corner... wink.gif
Star_of_Lei
Hi, I get what EVERYONE is saying. I know MHB really well, she's one of my best friends at school. And I've known her since year seven. Thankfully she's not the type of person who would take being told to cut herself seriously, I hope not, but it is not helpful. I'm the only on who gets to read her songs and the one she wrote about her parents spliting up, well let's just say thank god it was only on paper.
Yeah, her post was very intense and confrontational, but in all honesty, it's a front people like her and to some extent me, need to build in order to get through high school. She was completely right, from my perspective of the girls at my school who ask " Are you a goth?" in that really pathetic way, like it's an insult, they are all pretty much sl*ts.
She won't have taken being told to cut herself personally, or at least I hope not, infact, I truly doubt that she has read the rest of this thread. Just please watch who you say that sought of thing to in the future please. Thanks.

Oh and p.s. she really is 13 like me.
Mata
Snuggs, I do appreciate what you're saying. I know that Wookie didn't mean it seriously, but it's just not the kind of thing to joke about when speaking to a person about whom you know nothing other than they have been bullied at school. From what Star of Lei says, MHB's sensible enough to not take it seriously, but I still regard it as an irresponsible response to the post. Jokes about self-harm are pretty distasteful, but sometimes a valuable coping machanism, telling someone else to do it to themselves, even in jest, just isn't the kind of thing an adult should do.

To put this another way, in the rules it says 'mind your language', and that is in most part talking about swearing but it is also talking about the way that you write. You could write a whole pornogrphic novel and only use language that would could feature in the Queen's Christmas speech, but it wouldn't be appropriate for here. Again, that's being pedantic about the overall rules of all the forums. tongue.gif

To me it's just common decency: you don't tell people to go an cut themselves. It's not funny; however, I can easily believe that it was a breach of taste, and as such a mistake. We all sometimes say things that later (sometimes very quickly) we go 'oh balls, that really came out stronger than I meant it to be'. Maturity is about saying 'yeah, it's a fair cop, sorry about that' rather than trying to say that really it was okay.

I know Wookie's sense of humour is not mainstream. I've enjoyed reading his posts and chatting with him on here and at the pub. I'd suggest that the tastes of many people here are also slightly off-kilter, but I think that most people will agree that telling someone else, even in jest, to cut themself isn't funny.

I don't see any personal insult in MHB's post. It reads as a reconstruction of a typical confrontation with bullying girls at her school, a reading that it supported by Star of Lei's post. Admittedly, it would have been far more clear if she had put speech marks around the bits that were giving an example of arguments she has with bullies, but the language definitely shows that the insult wasn't to Wookie. To go back to the post:
QUOTE
just because your face is so stiff with all that make-up you wear, you sl*t. really, it's always those kind of people [etc.]

If she was writing about Wookie then she would have said 'it's always your kind of people' instead of 'those'. Like I say, additional grammar would have helped clarity, indicating what was a hypothetical confrontation and what was addressed to the forum, and I can see where the confusion lies, but I didn't for a moment think that she was calling Wookie a make-up covered slut. It would have been very odd, considering his avatar of a man drinking Guinness!

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'm going to take some photographs of myself draped over gravestones.

EDIT: And this is just another example about why good grammar is essential on forums. It's funny (funny-bizarre, not 'haha') how often that comes up at times like this.
Astarael
I do see where there was a misunderstanding on both sides with the loaded words and lack of clarifying punctuation. Mutual apologies here, I think.
However, it's obnoxious to use the word slut all the time when you don't know if it's true. Just because someone who wears too much makeup pisses you off doesn't mean that they sleep around a lot, which is indeed the definition of a slut. You were starting the rant about people who make fun of emos. You said that you don't like people dissing you, and you're doing the exact same thing to people who happen to like makeup and don't understand emo. By your own standards, *you* deserve a good slap. (I have similar objections to using gay as an insult, but I'm saving that rant for a rainy day when it's relevant.)
I do agree that suggesting cutting was wrong and possibly dangerous, but age is no excuse for a rude post. Wrong on both sides here, and the newbie needs to learn about punctuation whilst ranting.
By the way, Mata, I've heard bits about the suicide but been unable to find any details on that. If I'm not overstepping my bounds here, would you mind pointing me to the relvant thread?
CommieBastard
Astareal: I'll tell you about it in PMs.
Astarael
I've gotten it. Thanks.
Wookiee
I'm happy to admit that what I posted was in bad taste, but I'm not in the habit of apologising when I'm not genuinely sorry.

QUOTE (Mata @ Oct 16 2005, 03:24 PM)
And this is just another example about why good grammar is essential on forums.

You may notice I never actually told, as seems to be widely accepted, anyone to self-harm. I said, "Maybe you could start?" and not "Maybe you should start." Tongue, cheek, etc.
