Christmas is just around the corner, so it gives me a valid excuse to enjoy my most favourite treat of the season: the mince pie! Of all the countless goodies that Christmas brings to our mouths, I find the mince pie irresistible.

However, I have discovered that my love of them is not shared by everyone! I cannot quite comprehend why anyone would dislike them, and my only conclusion is that these people are just doing it in order to fight against the conformity of Christmas commercialism, but they secretly devour hundreds of them when nobody is looking.

Naturally, I decided a poll of Matazonians was in order.

So... like them, or hate them? Or maybe you haven't had one, or don't even know what one is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mince_pie).

This poll refers to the sweet mince pie, of Christmas tradition:

QUOTE
Mince pies normally have a pastry top, but versions may also be found without the top in which case they are known as mince tarts. Mince pies are filled with mincemeat a preserve typically containing apple, dried fruits such as raisins and sultanas, spices, and either suet or vegetable shortening.

I make my own mince pies. And they are glorious.

More to follow later.

More to follow later = recipe and pictures, right?!

...and samples wink.gif

I could not vote; there was not an appropriate option. tongue.gif None of them adequately express my disgust for mince pies.

I generally don't like any desserts that involve raisins or other dried fruits (cranberries being the exception). Mince pies, Christmas pudding, fruitcake...blech. I like raisins and most dried fruit on its own, just not in stuff. Kind of like how I like raw cherries, but not cherry pie, and raw apples, but not apple pie or apple cake.

...I'm really not a picky eater, honest! This post contains the bulk of my dislikes as far as food is concerned (the other main one being the horrible things restaurants over here seem to try to pass off as Mexican food tongue.gif )!

That's okay, it keeps the results skewed in my favour, thus denying the mince pie haters any recognition smile.gif

Anybody that doesn't like apple pie isn't deserving of the chance to comment anyway wink.gif

I am incomplete.

Used to not like them, because i was young and thought they were made out of the animal type of minced meat, and would just eat the surrounding pastry. Now that I am older and wiser (?) I appreciate them in their full glory. Mmmmm. Incomplete without mulled wine though.

Yeah, sure, but what about the mince pie topic?...

Ba-dum-tush tongue.gif

I'm sure someone will be willing to force mince pies down your mouth whilst you are here.

Mulled wine does help.
Or having brandy-soaked mincemeat.
Or just being brandy-soaked yourself, before you start eating.

Mmmmmmmmm piiiiiieee! Of any kind! Piiiiiiiie! wub.gif

How can anyone NOT like mince pies. It's not right I tells ya! Just not right! dry.gif

*me shuns Cand (well for a couple of mins anyhow)*

Love mince pies we make are own ever year and they HAVE to be doused in brandy butter (mum keeps trying to talk me out of makeing the brandy butter each year because we've had it still in the fridge for 6 month after xmas before now but that it's just not right with out). nomnomnom
Hobbes
And, uh, when are these mince pies likely to be ready? I'll get together some cake tins and be on my way...
Phyllis
Hmm. You know...It occurs to me that perhaps I should try homemade mince pies (and maybe even Christmas pudding) before dismissing them completely. I've only ever had them at my in-laws' house. Their Christmas pudding is store-bought, and the mincemeat comes from a jar and is spooned into bought pastry (or it has been when I've been there and paying attention, at least).

Mind you, I'll probably still hate them, as I don't like the stuff that goes into them, but I can't really say I've given them a shot if I've not had homemade, I think. And if I find a high-rated recipe, make it, and don't like it...well, I know moop will eat them, at least!

I feel kinda bad for being the first one to actually vote "no"...

But then I do sort of have deformed taste-buds, so that's my excuse. Actually, I don't really mind them, per se, they don't disgust me or anything, I'm just not a big fan of them, and don't enjoy eating them particularly.

Even someone that votes "No", starts to defend them. You are weak tongue.gif

The 'More to follow later' has come!

I will not divulge my recipe.. for in it there are many family secrets that if released could and WOULD set into motion the downfall of most civilized nations...

That being said... It cannot be called a mince pie without first cooking the mince in a mixture of sherry and rum. It makes it wholesome that way. And Rounded. (cue drummer)

I would consider sending samples or inviting folks over for some... but that would mean less for me. Sorry, but I am a little possessive of my pie. And my wooden spoon as left splinters in some that got 'handsy'

So, as my favorite professor would say: Discuss!
Hobbes
The best thing about homemade mince pies, is that I can eat a lot more of them before I start feeling oogy. Supermarket mince pies must have some kind of ingredient added to help addicts. Homemade ones though: I can eat like a total pig \o/
Daria
My favourites have a meringue top instead of pastry and a slice of home-made marzipan at the bottom under the mincemeat. Om nom.
Hobbes
QUOTE (Daria @ Nov 19 2010, 11:43 AM) *

Although, again, it seems there are a few odd folk around that don't like marzipan!

Marzipan yum!

I hate mince pies and I seriously dislike marzipan, Christmas cake and Christmas pudding.

Blegh, Blurgh, BLAH!
Phyllis
I am meh about marzipan. I'll eat it, but I won't seek it out. More likely, I'll just give it to moop.

I like the name more than the food. Maaarzipan. It's a cool word. biggrin.gif

Daria
After a barman friend of mine made me an amaretto sour, I am more in love with marzipan than ever. It has to be home-made though, otherwise it's terrible. Unless the person who made it is rubbish at making marzipan.
gothictheysay
Never had it, would try it, but doesn't sound like I would like it. However, I *am* a horribly picky eater, so there's that.
Hobbes
My step-niece, each Christmas, devours several hundred mince pies... but only of the iced-topped variety (probably fondant). In fact, there's usually a text message sent to everyone she knows declaring:

"Ive [sic] brought [sic] the first minced [sic] pies of the year!!!!!!!".

Ahem.

Glad to see that the "Yes" people outnumber the "No" people, on the poll smile.gif
SPEAKERfortheLOST
We must endeavor to make certain that all members know the truth of real mince pies!

Get the pies ready! I'll round up the stragglers and sit them down with a nice flagon of mulled wine and a fork!

Onward Mince Pie Soldiers! Onward!

side-note: Been watching way too much bad anime recently...
Hobbes
Eating mince pies... with a FORK?!

Goodness, you are a civilised type! My hand is a perfectly good shovel, thank you smile.gif
SPEAKERfortheLOST
Well I wouldn't want to wilt the pie! It shall be a chilled fork too!
Hobbes
Fine, if you insist.

I'll be over later for the mince pies...

Oh Phyllis I cant understand your distaste
: for the beautiful, wondrous mince pie.
It's tasty, its scrumptious, and gorgeously laced
: with the mincemeat which doth make me sigh!

Perhaps it is time that you had one more try.
: Tuck into a pie... maybe two?!
Make some at home, or head out and buy
: and see if it changes your view.

Harsh, but fair.

Hmm... haven't had a mince pie for about a week now. I better get on that!

Apparently, Sainsbury's are doing a mince pie flavoured ice cream. I also got a booklet from them that has a recipe for making Christmas pudding blondies with leftover Christmas pudding.

I'm going to try them. They look edible. We shall see!

We had some in work today from M&S that had Mitsi's on the top. Apparently M&S are drug-dealing on the side.

Just to say that I happily nommed six mince pies last night.

oh, and also, more please...
