Soooooooo, I know quite a lot of you made it to Oxford but I didn't so I was wondering when and where we can meet up next? I'm always happy to travel in to London but also have car, will travel smile.gif I know it won't be the same without Mata and I know there are whisperings about going over to Breda but I'm not sure that's happening this year?

Posted by: Tarantio Sep 9 2010, 09:29 AM

I missed it too, unfortunately. It'd be good to see folk again, so I'll keep my options open in the hopes that something gets off the ground smile.gif

Posted by: Mata Sep 14 2010, 03:56 PM

I suspect people will need a bit of notice before planning a trip to Breda. How would you all feel like a trip to Breda around February next year? I don't know when I'll be in the UK next so you guys are going to have to work out a Christmas one without me.

Shame you guys missed the Oxford one, it was a stonker!

Posted by: Cath Sep 14 2010, 07:24 PM

Yup much fun and drinking was had by all.

Posted by: Pixiegoth Sep 15 2010, 07:34 AM

I can't do Feb unfortunately as I can't usually take time off during term time. I may be able to wangle a long weekend?

Posted by: Mata Sep 15 2010, 08:00 AM

When are the UK school holidays? I have four terms over here but I'm sure there are overlaps.

It's university hols actually smile.gif I am off most of December but probably in Chicago and then not again until late March/April and I have a Kids in Museums project for that time in Coventry and most of summer so I don't think I'll be able to take a long holiday until Summer 2011 or even Xmas that year! ohmy.gif I could wangle a long weekend perhaps smile.gif

We're happy to come to a meet. Not sure we could afford a trip to the Dutch land though. London is always good for us. We have a car now so if we wanted to go a little further we could manage that too

Posted by: Lurker in the Dark Sep 17 2010, 07:52 PM

Lo, I'm up for a meet. I'm also (by some miraculous stupidity on the part of my insurer) insured to drive on the continent so can drive to the Low countries if req'd. Otherwise London is good cause. Not november but other than that I think I'm free.

Posted by: Daria Sep 20 2010, 12:10 PM

Roadtrip to the Nederland? Hells yeah!

That is all.

Posted by: Mata Sep 20 2010, 01:14 PM

Speaking from experience, on the Chunnel it takes about six hours to drive from Oxford to Breda - which was less than it took to get from Oxford to Hull! Breda's not nearly as far away as it seems. A friend visited this weekend and got a return ticket on a coach from London for 35 pounds, so it can be cheap too!

Posted by: Tarantio Sep 20 2010, 05:57 PM

If I do come to Holland, I'm probably going to get myself kicked out trying to syphon the sea over the dykes. However, it shall be fun while it lasts, at least biggrin.gif

Posted by: Faerieryn Sep 25 2010, 02:35 PM

Now a 35 pound ticket each Matt and I could afford! If people fancy visiting Mata for a weekend and he doesn't mind us all descending we'd be up for that! If not London is always good for us!

Posted by: Lurker in the Dark Sep 25 2010, 08:06 PM

Ok, for 35 I'll get the bus. In fact I vote we all get the same bus over and just take over the backseats ala school trips. Who's got a really cheap set of speakers and a Queen tape?

--- Edited to add ---

Just looked at the Eurolines site, out on the 15th and back on the 17th October (I have that wekeend free, no other reason) it's leave London Victoria at 7pm to arrive Breda at 05:10 am on the 16th (10hrs) and back is leave Breda at 12:45 to arrive London Victoria at 20:15 (7.5 hrs). Price is 38 per head based on 8 people going. Thast just to get us started though.

Posted by: Faerieryn Sep 26 2010, 01:55 PM

Looks good. Just remember that I am a teacher so I can't get Fridays and Monday's off unless they are half term weekends. I also think we may have to look into accomodation if there is a large group of us going. Mata are there any cheap travel-lody type places around you?

Posted by: Mata Sep 26 2010, 08:01 PM

I reckon we could fit 8 people in my place. I've got a spare bedroom for two (with enough floor space for another one easily if needed) and you could comfortably sleep five in our living room. Frankly we could fit more but things would start getting very friendly!

I'm very excited that you all might come and visit smile.gif

Posted by: Daria Sep 27 2010, 09:16 PM

I have my student loan but no passport sad.gif Stupid impulse travelling getting stopped by lack of required documentation.

Posted by: Mata Sep 28 2010, 02:05 PM

Yep, I'm afraid that the travel police people are known for being sticklers for passports. Also, do not attempt to cross on an armoured vehicle.

Posted by: Daria Sep 28 2010, 03:25 PM

It was the Metropolitan police, not the transport police, who had a problem with that wink.gif (Duly noted)

Posted by: Lurker in the Dark Sep 28 2010, 06:29 PM

Right, shall we stick a date on it? Ryn, when are you available? I'm fairly busy in November and can't do around half-term in October. but November isn't completely out. December is probs best of the next three months for me though.

Posted by: Faerieryn Oct 2 2010, 04:25 PM

I am available most weekends except the first one in December. I finish work at 3.30 on Fridays so if we have enough notice we could get an overnight coach from Victoria at about 5 on the Friday night. Is anyone else up for it?

Posted by: Mata Oct 4 2010, 08:43 AM

Lurker - liase with my social secretary to find a date we're free on. Laura keeps track of the dates that people are visiting. Hmm... Maybe I should create a Google calendar for this sort of thing?

I do know that my parents are coming along on 12-14th December. The weekend after that might be free.

Posted by: moop Oct 4 2010, 07:21 PM

I can't get holiday in December. sad.gif Will be more specific about the dates I can do at some point.

Posted by: Lurker in the Dark Oct 4 2010, 07:42 PM

I'll grab her at the weekend. Only weekend I specifically can't do in Nov is the 13th-14th. The rest I can manage.

Posted by: moop Oct 5 2010, 05:47 PM

I can do dates between the 20th of Nov and the 5th of December. Cand probably won't be able to make it unless it's the very end of that period due to NaNoWriMo.

Posted by: Lurker in the Dark Oct 11 2010, 06:02 PM

Ok, I've had a meeting with the social sec and the only weekend they're available out of Moops set is the 19th-21st November so we're pencilled in for then. All those in favour say "Aye!" and I'll figure out what I need to drive abroad. 19th is the Friday btw, I was presuming that at least some people would go over on the Friday night. Chunnel is every half an hour and we can get a car for 78, which is probably cheaper than the bus or train including the petrol which would be approx 40. Split 5 ways thats 32 a head.

Right, headcount please and the car is first come, first served.

Posted by: moop Oct 11 2010, 08:52 PM

That'll be interesting, I'll see what I can do about the Friday but it should be okay. smile.gif What time are people thinking of travelling?

Dibs on a seat please. biggrin.gif

Oops, I accidentally deleted Moop's next post:

Gah! Sounds like I can't book that day off after all and may end up working that weekend. sad.gif

Do you think it might be worth rearranging for some other time based on the current number of people who can make it? If not then have fun. smile.gif

Anyway, are there any Engelsmen and Engelsmense who fancy coming over for a visit? 'Tis lovely over here and it would be very nice to see you all.

Posted by: Daria Oct 13 2010, 07:12 PM

I would very very much love to, but the financial situation is that I can't. Unless the Driver takes IOUs >_>

Posted by: Lurker in the Dark Oct 13 2010, 08:32 PM

Well if three people put their names down soon thats cool, I can still do it. But it's on hold currently pending more people.

Sorry Daria, I'm not doing That well atm. Much as I'd like to.

Posted by: Daria Oct 14 2010, 07:08 PM

Totally understood- it seems to be that way for everyone at the moment. Yay! Recession!

Posted by: LoLo Oct 26 2010, 04:11 PM

So a lot of you already know this, but for those who don't, I'm going to be in the UK for pretty much all of January (I leave the 24th). I thought I'd put that out there if anyone wanted to hang while I'm there. If not, that's cool too.

Posted by: Mata Oct 30 2010, 08:28 AM

Hmm... Hey Lurker, how about seeing if Lo and any others fancy coming over in January? Lo, how'd you fancy the idea of visiting Holland for a couple of days?

Posted by: Lurker in the Dark Oct 30 2010, 11:29 AM

I was thinking today about suggesting Feb half-term to fit in with the teaching peeps, but Jan is just as good. I've got some of the car stuff I'll need off Cath's parents so I'll just check I can hang on to it for an extra couple of months.

Any date suggestions? Just cause the earlier we get to this bit the easier it is in the long run.

Posted by: Mata Oct 30 2010, 01:19 PM

Lo: if you fancy this then it's up to you - I won't be offended if you don't fancy it, in which case we'll stick to the half-term hol in February, but if you do want to do this then pick a weekend when you're free.

Posted by: LoLo Oct 31 2010, 12:23 AM

I like the idea and if other people are up for it, I would be as well. I'm just not sure who could afford the time and money to do it and it seems like (at least for transportation) it's something that would be a bit more affordable with the more people willing. It would be cool to add another country notch to my umm bedpost? laugh.gif

Posted by: Lurker in the Dark Nov 2 2010, 08:39 PM

Well I reckon that would be three peeps, so would only need another two to fill my car at least. Dates people, it's the only way wink.gif

Posted by: Pixiegoth Nov 18 2010, 04:57 PM

I'm also in the teaching boat and can't take time off outside of school holidays. I don't get back from Chicago until 7th January (leave on 5th December) so could do 15-16th January or last weekend in January but then Lo's not here. I'm busy on 22-23rd at the mo.

Lo, happy to hang while in you're over here....I know we haven't met face to face yet but it's a great opp yes biggrin.gif

Posted by: LoLo Nov 18 2010, 05:31 PM

As far as this trip goes, you guys should schedule it for when you want to go. If it works best for when I'm there, that's cool, if not then that's cool too.
