Just had this brought to my attention by someone on the Whitby boards

Would you like to think that somebody can type in your surname and location and find, not only your address, but directions on how to get there?

    http://www.b4usearch.com does exactly that...

If you don't want your details there, don't bother with the remove me button- that'll only ask you to give your home phone, mobile phone, and email address- and you won't be removed, it says, without them. Instead, email privacy@b4u.co.uk and request removal, if they haven't done it in 21days you can email compliance@ico.gsi.gov.uk (I think that's the address, it's my dad's writing so I'm not sure) and they'll chase it.

    So yeah.

Thought I'd better make you aware of it

Odd. It found Ed but it was at his parent's address and it doesn't even recognise me. Does this mean I don't exist?!? huh.gif

Not sure how this is going to actually be an issue? I don't care if people track me down. They'd have to know my name and location and if they knew that I'm guessing they knew me well enough to already have my home addy, etc.

That was my thought as well. I can google anyone's full name and location in the US and if they are listed in the phonebook, it will give me a result with their address, phone number, and a link to get a map to their house.

I don't see how it's any different from being listed in the phone book. Someone could look you up there and just go to an online mapping site as well.

I was amused when looking for moop and snoo's family (not stalkerish, I've been to all of their houses and could find them in my sleep!). They have their uncle and aunt listed as living with their parents for some reason on the electoral roll thing....which they don't.

I love you in a way that is mystical and eternal and illegal in 20 states.

Ermm, that's what an electoral role is. A list of all registered voters that's in the public domain. Tie that into some mapping website (google maps, mapquest, streetmap et al), and you get directions to anyone you want.

It's worth noting that when you register to vote, there's a little box on the form that you can tick to have your name removed from the public copy of the electoral role.

If you contact your local council's electoral register department, they can tell you if you're on the public register or not, and remove you from it if you are.

192.com has been offering this sort of service for at least five years. Yes, it's a stalker's paradise, but the electoral roll always has been.

Sadly, legistlation regarding the privacy of the electoral roll came into play after my details were sold off by my local council so I was put on every list going and there's no way of being removed from all of them. It is amusing when people phone me up though:

"Hi! Your house has been selected because of your postcode to be show property for Expensive-Refit Magazine."

Me- "Ah right. What postcode is that?"

"[says my old postcode]"

Me- "That's not my postcode."

"Yes it is."

"..." etc.

As a teacher don't you get automatically ex-directory'd or something? I dunno but one of my friends parents is a teacher and they were always ex-directory because they were registered as a teacher.

I'm jibbering...
