A friend just posted on Facebook that she has bought a washing machine for the first time. She is eight months pregnant and married, but buying the washing machine is the thing that felt grown up to her.

I've had a similar-ish thing this week myself - a first kiss in my own house while pretty sober... I think it was the location that did it. Generally the first kiss has been in a bar, at a party, or occasionally at a rented place I'm living, but doing this in my own house felt weirdly different.

What's made you feel grown up recently?

hello, it has been almost two years since i have been here. is everyone doing well?

The past four years have been an adventure of grown-up stuff like FIND A JOB, feed yourself, acquire pets, get and furnish an apartment and so on. Which is cool! It got terrible a few weeks ago with a lot of bureaucratic immigration things looming at me and feeling generally trapped by my decisions (have to immigrate because job have to job because apartment have to apartment because otherwise homeless etc) rather than excited/fulfilled by them. Which is the worst aspect of grownup-ness, I think, that exhausted malaise from your own decisions weighing on you, obligations, etc.

And then I remembered that I am young and dumb still and get to make dumb decisions like--pick up and go without looking back!--and spent several happy minutes cruising fantasy apartments in any American city that struck my fantasy. (New Orleans wins.) Then today I got stoned and called immigration and figured out Ó travers my inept franšais the forms I needed and sent thum. A good combination, I think, of grown-up and not at all.

True. The biggest difference between childhood and becoming a grown-up (generally speaking) is the taking-on of new obligations and responsibilities. You never realise how carefree life was, until it isn't.
