I've always been dead set against Anime, but now I feel I may have been a little harsh, basing my opinion of it entirely on Pokemon and suchlike. I think that now is the time for me to see some real anime, and I figured that there are bound to be anime obsessives on this board, I should ask you lot for your opinion of how I should break into Anime.

As a film that inspired The Matrix, Akira is definately on my list of anime to watch. Is this a good idea? Should I start with something else? Is Akira actually anime, or is it some other obscure branch of japanese animation, and are all the anime obsessives going to shout at me and tell me its I'm wrong and its Manga or something.

Finally, whats the difference between Anime and Manga?

Umm... As I understand it Manga is usually the comic strips. The issue is confused a little because quite a lot of anime comes from Manga, so gets referred to as such.

Akira is good, but the plot is a bit messed up if you watch the dubbed version. Luckily the DVD gives you the chance to see it with the original Japanese soundtrack and subtitles which makes more sense.

A nice starter would be something like Ghost In The Shell. It's lively, quite user friendly, and can be fairly thought provoking.

Hope thats of some use!

hmm some good animes,

well for the darker side of things: Lain, Witch Hunter Robin, Yami no Matsuei, Pet shop of Horrors

for the funnier side of things: Fruit baskets (one of my favorite over all), Azuzumanga Daioh (i think this is how you spell it, but i cant really remember).

My suggestions for anime are Vampire Hunter D, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Armatage: The Third- Poly Matrix, Armatage: The Third- Duel Matrix, Ninja Scroll, Ninja Ressurection and more I can't think of.

As for Hentai (anime porn) you've got The Blue Girl, Pink Dragon and New Angel 1 through 5

My friend Billie suggests Birdie, but I've never seen it.

As for Manga, I suggest Crying Freeman, Lone Wolf and Cub and Ramna 1/2.

There's all kinda of good anime out there. You just have to look for it.

I want to echo some of the previous recommendations: Lain, Akira (practically a must-see), Petshop of Horrors, Vampire Hunter D, and Ranma 1/2.

My added ideas: I loved Escaflowne and Fushigi Yuugi for opposite reasons - Escaflowne for its realistic characters, and FY for the absolute absurdity of the character traits.

As far as movies go, you must see Perfect Blue - powerful psychological thriller, plus it's the only anime movie I've seen where the characters all look slightly Asian. Also, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, both are absolutely amazing films by Miyazaki.

And finally, in the risqué section, the Sakura Diaries. Absolutely cracked me up.

Well, Pokemon wasn't that bad, but then again, it was a strictly-kid anime...

Like Missy said, Miyazaki is really good, especially Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Some good series anime (also in manga) are Ranma 1/2, Chobits, Marmalade Boy, etc.... =D

Pokemon was a promotional tool for a game market. I'd hardly even respect it as an anime, even if it was Japanese and was drawn in the typical art style... dry.gif

I loved Fushgi Yuugi, the manga was soo funny, it was okay as anime, but only the first episode was nicely animated. I think it was done by clamp.. they should have stuck with clamp.. anyways if you liked fushigi yuugi and havent seen fruit baskets i would suggest watching it. The both kinda on the same absurd level.

As foe Escaflowne.. it had a good enough plot line.. but when it came to the animation it really lacked. I swear they could kill people with their nose's

Heh, I didn't say I watched Escaflowne strictly for the aesthetic value of the animation... but even so, I understand your point with the noses... En guard!

I have three volumes of the manga of FY, all of which I absolutely adore! Yu Watase is my hero.

Well, it could take a lot of time and money to watch them all, but I'll definately try to watch Akira, Lain (which I've never even heard of) and Ghost in the Shell.

I may check out some Manga, if the anime proves decent enough, but I really dont think Hentai is for me.

Correct.

One of mine too now. Saw it round Mata's years ago, and it didn't really sink in (blame overconsumption of beer prior to viewing).
Recently bought him a Region 1 copy (what with me being in the States and him not), and had a cheeky watch. Re-affirmed the belief that it's frickin ninja-good, so had to go back and get myself a copy.

You cannee miss Akira either, and thanks to this forum, I'm not going to watch it subtitled instead of dubbed.

Personally, I'm an anime puritan - I can't watch dubbed. I just can't bring myself to insult the anime with the horror of English-speaking voices. Anime was not meant for such abuse.

Okay, so now I know that I've got to watch Ghost in the Shell and Akira, and I've got to make sure that they're subtitled not dubbed. Cool.

has anyone ele seen the "overfeind" series? it is really sick (no joke. death, decapitation, mutalation and rape feature. not one for the impressionable people. if you can watch it without wanting to kill the director you either have the strength of a saint or some serious mental problem). good animation though.
what about "blood the last vampire"? really good mix of straight-up anim and CG anim. they are both manga if i remember correctly. what about "x"? (dont know if this is its full title). it has quite a nice story.

X had a kick-ass storyline in the manga, as well as prettyful drawings... CLAMP... *swoons*

The X:1999 movie, well... wasn't too fond of that... cool animation, scattered plot. Poorly executed, really.

Ranma 1/2 is sooo funny.. I love that one.. we have a couple of seasons on dvd. It is fabulous.. I wish they would put it on adult swim.. just to make my life easier... and I agree on the subtitle thing.. the English dubs make for a horrible anima.. that is just like with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon..when I listen to it without the subtitles I was horrified... Dubs only work in old Kung Fu movies...

ok, i might be a newbie but trust me; im an anime geek. a couple i havent heard so far are cowboy bebop and trigun. (if you already said these i must have missed them). those two are a couple of my favorites. also there are some that are, well, lets just say you have to get used to the idea of them. outlaw star was ok, pilot candidate/candidate for godess, blue seed, or maybe tokyo babylon. if you wanna ge into manga you have to check out anything you can find from CLAMP. dont just go out and watch X. the X mana was completely different from X/1999.also for manga you could sheck out shonen jump, a mix of different manga series. each book is about 300-400 pages long and has naruto, shaman king, yu yu hakusho, one peice, and some others that i dont read much. my favorite anime movies have already been said with akira and princess mononoke. listen to the people when they say the hayao miyazaki is a genius.

I was going to have Alita as my av but then I noticed that someone else here had excactly the same pic... dry.gif (forgotten who though...)
The only anime I've had a chance to see are Akira, Ghost in the shell and Battle angel Alita (I have a very norrow minded family and wouldn't hear the end of it if they saw me watch anime.... I have to download it and watch it on the pc when they're out) and all of them are really good. Akira messed with my head a little because I'd had very little sleep over the last few days and it was about 3 olock when I watched it, took a while to get my head around what the bleep just happened.
