Death all the way! I love the way he keeps getting things slightly wrong - there's something quite endearing about it.
I was so unutterably chuffed when I played him at University (as I mentioned in a previous thread), but it still came with its pitfalls. Firstly, I had to pose for a mask-fitting, which involved wearing a plastic bag on my head and covering my face with Vaseline. Yeesh... Then I had to find a way to make myself taller. Death is a towering and imposing figure, and I... ain't. I'm 5' 11" (in shoes), and that just doesn't cut it. In the end my dad crafted a pair of siz-inch platform shoes out of an old pair of boots and some wood. Fan-bloody-tastic. The cloak was easy, but finding a scythe was trickier. We almost had to resort to using a crappy plastic thing, but then my parents found a bloke selling one ofr a tenner at a car boot sale. It's bloody massive - about 51/2 feet, with a 3 foot blade - and it now hands on my wall above me bed. The whole set-up was bizarre. There I stood in platform boots, wearing a thick black cloak that brushed the floor and an all-over plaster-of-paris mask that meant that I couldn't wear my glasses, weilding a scythe. It's amazing no-one died... The year after the next I played Vimes, which was far easier as it took a less extreme costume, a less artificially booming voice, and Vimes and I are practically the same person anyway... -------------------- the end is nice |

They are the books by Terry Pratchett about a fantastical place called the Discworld where witches, wizards, werewolves and Death (on Binky the horse) roam around. They are very, very funny, I love the witches, most of my friends say I'm Nanny Ogg coz I want a whole troupe of nameless daughters in law to run my errands and make me roll ups. And of course she's the ownner of Greebo the cat, who is both vile and wonderful at the same time.

I could barely believe I was cast in those parts, jic. They are, after all, my favourite characters. And, according to one Pratchett nerd (I use the term affectionately...) I was exactly how they imagined Vimes to be.
Go me! And I like Susan. So yay. -------------------- the end is nice |

Which one? They're all good, but some are better than others.
The non-Discworld books are worth a look too, especially as they include one of my all-time faves - 'Good Omens', a book Pratchett wrote with Neil Gaiman. If you haven't read it, read it. I just re-read it recently, and it still makes me laugh out loud. -------------------- the end is nice |

i have to say pratchett is insanely brilliant.
i mean how do you come up with a world that is flat on the back of four elephants, on the back of a giant space turtles of unknown sexual orientation(bit like mittens arrggh the concept scary mittens is great a'tuin aaaarrrgh!) plus the amazingly wide variety of characters available. the patrician's sheer ability has to be respected along with his polar opposite carrot (similar abilities just different manifestations) death's simplistic approach to everything is execellantly done, poor poor rincewind, the always amusing great gaspode, the mighty detritus and dorlf. and the classic duo of nobby and colon |

I'm only on the 6th one - which is a nice cool witchy one... but I hafta say Death is me fave! I hurt meself laughing at Mort.
InKy - I'd sooooooo love to play Death! He gets all the best lines - like when he's summoned an he appears with a coctail nibble (cos he's been at a party) "Is it a good party?" "Yes, but it might get ugly at midnight" "Oh. Why?" "They think I'm going to take my mask off" TP is an insane genius... -------------------- The author of this post is entirely fictional and is intended for entertainment purposes only. Noooo! How could anyone choose?! If I was to only go by his last few books then I'd say the stand-alones, since with the exception of the Truth they've all been pants. Of course, I'd have to ignore the fact that practically everything post Equal Rites was trouser-moisteningly brilliant for that to work, and that's bordering on sacrilege.
Ack, I'll go with the Watch series, since they were my introduction and so merit a bit of rose-tintedness. -------------------- The Rubber Chicken - PVC fetishist? Poultry lover? We can only disappoint!

Dunno Crissi... they were written in an order, an some of them have characters that follow on from earlier ones. Plus TP gets bored of explainin the way the Discworld works by "Mort", an he only explains rimward, hubward, turnwise an widdershins in the first one.
I guess ya could read em in order. I am, but I'm a bit anal like that. I hate doin stuff out o sequence. It confoozes the hell outa me if I do... -------------------- The author of this post is entirely fictional and is intended for entertainment purposes only. Not really, Crissi... Each book has a bit of Discworld backstory in it, and the characters are alwayd set up anew each time. It's more of a case of 'the more you read 'em, the more you understand'. There's a bit of back-reference that you won't get, but you should be fine with it.
But read 'Good Omens' as well. leo - One of my fave lines in the play version was 'I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BOY, BUT I COULD MURDER A CURRY'. A very satisfying line to bellow from back stage. -------------------- the end is nice |

I must say that DEATH is hilarious! Everyone knows that they have a mini DEATH inside of them...
