Yeah people! It's true. I played the violin from 7-18 and then stopped when I went to Uni. Mainly because every orchestra at Uni wanted music degree students and at the time I was, and still am, only Grade 6
I've let it slide for toooooo long (I'm now 27) and went and had my first lesson last night. My word I suck! I can't believe how many bad habits either I picked up along the way or were taught by previous teachers. Luckily my new teacher is really lovely so I hope she'll be able to help. I know this isn't a very interesting topic but it's about as interesting as my life gets at the moment I wasn't sure if this was 'Daily Life' or 'Daft'. My violin playing certainly is! -------------------- Hope confidentally, do valiantly, wait patiently!

Well, if you got up to grade 6 you couldn't possibly be that bad. Violin is a tough instrument too (not that I'd known from experience, but a few people I've known have tried it and given up because it was so hard). Good luck, anyway.
I can't imagine how bad I'll be if I ever start playing the piano again (I stopped when I was 13). Now there's a scary thought. -------------------- |

Pixiegoth ... it is your responsability as a human being to get into music and play musical instruments. Grade 6 is a serious level already and you know it ... its just before the discipline of conservatory preaching finally ruins it for everyone and they stop allowing themselves their own opinion on what to play ....
so GO PIXIEGOTH!!!! The violin is however a cruel and unforgiving instrument ... the theme-tune to Psycho, that has basically become the inner-voice af rampant terror for everybody in the westernized world, is a tribute to the violins most prominent qualities..... To conclude: Pixie, YAY YOU! a. for doing the instrument thing ... and b. for living 1500miles away from me -------------------- Smileys don't mean not destuctive and not vicious

Oooo ta guys! I fully intend to keep at it but I just sound like I'm strangling a cat and I'm really disappointed that I've forgotten so much and got so rusty Ah well, I'll keep at it and then join an orchestra. I have NO intentions of doing any more grades as they, along with my driving test, were the scurge of my life back when I was growing up! -------------------- Hope confidentally, do valiantly, wait patiently!

Violins are great. About the only instrument I ever managed to wrangle a decent tune out of. But then I quit to become an actor. Woo.
Keep it up, Pixie! I want to hear you play a sad, slow lament after I kick your ass at pool. -------------------- the end is nice |

I get so embarrassed that I keep having to kick my housemate out while I practice as I just can't have him hear me right now
I am beginning to wonder why I'm having lessons actually. I might just throw myself in at the deep end and join an orchestra. I don't sound too bad. My teacher is getting me to play scales! When am I going to need those then I'm playing in an orchestra. It's like quadratic equations (sp). I mean WHO uses those when they've left school! -------------------- Hope confidentally, do valiantly, wait patiently!

Scales are part of the vocabulary that peeps use to tell other peeps what to play, when the fly-sh*t isn't good enough. They are the inicial building blocks of all music, including the stuff that doesnt seem to adhere to any scale. It is also a large wooden apparatus used to weigh witches to see if they float. They are unfortunately necessary and a big help towards creating your own harmonic musical orgasms. Dont worry bout the scales, unless you have a pointy hat and a wart.
