Well, its official, I am going to lose some weight.

I think I need to. Reason being is i just came back from the Health Unit from a check up. My main reason for the checkup was to determine my use of birth control pills or not. Well, I can't use them due to the fact my BMI is 39 (which is high) and the failure rate would go up. Same with the patch.

So long story short, I can use the needle, but with this so my weight doesn't increase while on it, the nurse suggested I try weightwatchers out and increase physical activity and deal with my diet, that then the needle will also help me lose weight. I'll be monitored and so fourth.

It's gonna be a hill lets put it that way. Support and further help like advice and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'll need all the help I can get!

*gives you mounds of good luck*

I put off some weight, and then I put off a lot more while in the hospital on the crappy hospital food diet. However I gained that back tongue.gif I try not to eat cookies or doughnuts etc. as much. I don't calorie count. Now that it's summer I can play outside a lot more. I get more exercise in the summer than in winter, usually.

good luck. Seriously. All the more power to you.

I've been working out 6 to 7 days a week. Two summers ago I worked out approx 60 hours a week (with random breaks) and I lived off of salad -- I don't think some ppl are ment to loose weight.

but good luck!! I'll root for you.

Actually, you should really try switching off...one day of weight training, then one day of some sort of aerobic activity (like speed-walking, swimming...or..aerobics, if you actually like that sort of thing). With lots of stretching before both the weights and the aerobics because that helps keep the muscles you get long and nice looking instead of bulky...plus it's easier on your body if you warm up first. And as far as eating goes, you should really stick to the food pyramid that you see on most cereal boxes and reduce your calorie and fat intake. Living off of only salad isn't healthy. Your body probably thought it was starving. Ideally you should eat about every 2.5 to 3 hours, and not after around 6 or 7 PM at night. And get plenty of sleep. Lots of walking is good too. I personally had to re-learn what a portion of something was. Like meat. One portion of most lean meats = the size of a deck of cards. Read the serving sizes on packages, and stick to them. Be careful with fat free products, because a lot of them are packed full of sugar, and so they have a lot of calories. This is all stuff my doctor told me when he told me I had to lose 20 lbs...I haven't been the best at sticking to it, but when I did I lost 10 lbs rather quickly.

Anyway, it's good they tested you for such things before putting you on the pill, TL. That's the whole reason I ended up with a blood clot in my lung. Not fun, especially when it could end up in your heart or brain and kill ya dead. Definitely a good thing you got on the shot instead...although my doc told me it can have emotional side effects (I wouldn't know personally as I never got on it...contraceptive jelly = my god. Yay for no hormones). Good luck with the weight loss.

All the best.

I was desperate to lose weight after giving birth, but I had to wait until after my son wasn't breast feeding before I could even think about it.

Obviously, you need to use a little common sense - don't starve yourself etc... Just watch what you eat and exercise regularly. I managed to lose half a stone purely by walking for half an hour a day and eating less.

I think the other thing is not to panic about it. If you start getting wound up because you haven't lost as much as you would like then that can be detrimental in itself. Have a positive attitude. biggrin.gif

I actually asked the nurse about my concerns with the needle. One person said to me it could cause infertility and ive heard other things like that one emotional thing you mentioned. She said the only side effects I should get would be random periods at any time during the first 3 shots and either it would help me lose weight or gain it. The nurse was super nice and advised me if i diet while taking it and dfiet properly, it should go in my favour.

And I did check out weightwatchers. Although its a good program I really do not have that much money, its a fair bit. My alternate plan is find a good gym and get a membership. Cheaper and effective!

No, definately, just cut down on junk food, if you starve yourself you'll make yourself miserable and you'll end up bingeing which will also make you miserable - a hoprrible viscious circle! sad.gif

Walking is really great, enjoyable and free too! I'm not really into going to the gym but I don't find it hard to walk for forty minutes every day after work, it also helps me unwind and clear my head.

Good luck *hugs* smile.gif

smile.gif I do do that. I'm on a crew team, they regulate our excersizes. I got onto about 4 teams that summer, that's why I was doing so much. When we're not weight lifting we're doing something aerobic. Whether it's a 2 hr steady state, or a 6 mile run, or short sprints with intervals.

Trust me, I know what you're supposed to do and I've been doing it. I've only lost a little weight - the problem is within my family. The majority of us have extremely low metabolisms and so it makes it extremely difficult to loose weight.

thanks for the suggestions though - they were good - I just already knew them. tongue.gif

Then why were you only eating salads? Sorry, but that's just one really bad thing to do. And honestly it sounds like you're overkilling the working out. An hour per day of intense working out is plenty...especially if you walk a lot in addition to that. Maybe you should visit the doctor if you do actually do everything right and still have a problem. It might be an issue with your thyroid. A friend of mine had that problem.

And TL, the shot does have emotional side effects. I'm not spouting something I heard as a rumor. My doctor consulted a specialist to get his advice about my situation and what would be safe for me to use as contraceptive. The shot ended up being pretty much the only hormonal thing that was viable for me, and my doctor and I both agreed that wasn't the best route since it can cause weight gain and I need to lose weight by the end of the year to be at less of a risk for getting another blood clot so he can take me off of the blood thinners (wooo run-on sentence!). The emotional thing is not huge for most people, though.

And I'd honestly advise against a gym membership. Working out in front of people isn't fun. You're more likely to not work as hard because you don't want to breathe heavily and sweat in front of them (not to mention, if you have a large chest...oy). I personally would just get some ankle weights, dumbells, and a nice mat and work out at home, and walk around town (with the ankle weights on after you get used to walking really long distances). But heh...if you want to sweat like a pig in front of a bunch of people who are, on average, really fit...then go ahead. tongue.gif I just know that I would get discouraged doing that....plus the other stuff is cheaper in the long run.

Well the nurse lemme know that if i didnt like it after a while i could just go off the needle. My alternative is the diaphram, which is more like a barrier. So either way is alright.

As for the gym thing, I honestly do not care whgat people think of me if they saw me, my goal is my goal and they have there own things to deal with. One of thigns my sister taught me about dealing with weight way back in grade 9 when i had to interview her for some school thing, was just don't care what others say, if its positive great and if not its not and move on.

I accidentally lost weight last year when I simultaneously stopped eating meat and started black belt training. Now I just look plain gangly. anyway, all it goes to show is that even a small increase in excercise and some diet changes can help. Although I'm not recommending you go off meat altogether, you might concider cutting red meat out of your diet, which is what I did for a year before I went fully vegetarian. Red meat may have its merits but in the end it's a heart attack on a plate. It's also not hard at all to find substitute meats; ground turkey can replace ground beef, for example. Soy products are good alternatives to high meat consumption. Liquids and fruits are good for replacing snacks; afternoon tea and fruit usually holds me over until my next meal. Amasingly, simply doing crunches in the morning can help you take off some weight. Brisk walks don't hurt either.

10 basic rules for ya:
1-stop drinking soda (diet too, its still bad for you) and make it a part of your life to not usually drink soda ( i have drank probably what the avergae kid my age drinks in a month in the past 3 years) and drink more water
2-walk, dont drive
3-dance around your room to good music
4-dont starve yourself! if you are a huge sugar freak (like me), dont stop eating it altogether, just minimize it as much as you can. try not to binge. but dont take it hard if you do once in a blue moon. sh*t happens.
5-try to get active hobbies
6-dont do any weird diets likeatkins or south beach (thats what my dad did and he lost weight but i think it was really BAD!)
7-dont weigh yourself all the time, and always weigh yourself first thing in the morning after you use the bathroom. its the time you are the lightest, you have less food in you. so its physologcally just better.
8-join a gym! i find it to be easier to work out when im with other people doing it! and also get someone to force you to do the excersize (coach of a sports team etc.) when someone else is making you do it, you cant stop them, and you can hate them for making you do it instead of yourself for not doing it!
9-dont try to loose a lot of weight extremely fast. dont try to loose more than a max of 15 lb per month. its not healthy.
10-do yoga. its fun, its relaxing, i personally like the way stretching feels, and its proven to be excellent excersize. plus it really gets you centered mentally.

ok there we go. i actually lost 10-15 (im not sure how much?) lb since january, just because i joined soccer. i made myself run a mile every day for 4-6 days a week to prepare for the season, and then i lost weight just from being on soccer. and it just ended last week, so im trying to keep it off by eating as few sweets as possible and dancing around my room a lot and going out with my friends and walking a lot. i have for the past 3 years kept the soda and water thing and also the walking and going out a lot. i HIGHLY RECCOMEND yoga, its relaxing and it doesnt even feel like your getting a workout, but you are. i really do believe it makes you sleep and concentrate better too. tongue.gif, i havent been doing it much lately and generally am staying up till 1 and being a huge disorganized spaz. ok thats all. GOOD LUCK! and remember to always love yourself, no matter how big or small you are.

Also- Weighing yourself in general is a pretty poor judge of how fit you are. Muscle weighs more than fat, so its probably a better judge to look at yourself in the mirror, and see the difference.

Oooh! Or, you could get one of those nifty scales that measures your body fat percentage! I don't know how expensive they are, though. But if it's not too spendy, I think that might be a good investment. I'd be kind of scared to see what percent I'm at, though..lol. I wonder how those things work...

I've heard of those too. They may be pricey but as long as I have an accurate weight whether getting my depo to on a good bathroom scale, I think I'd be good.

Good suggestion though, might be something to still think about.

Update: I've been slacking off walking the dog lately, mainly because I feel like I am getting nothing out of it, it bores me.

I've been growing stready annoyed with myself for this, and also have felt really overwhelmed with figuring out what I should do that will be most convient for me so I don't go insane.

This summer I also will be applying for a job so whatever days i work I gotta balance with spare time and talking with Jonathan (he's my main and right now only line of support and encouragement that I am allowing) so talking with him is important to me.

Anyways my last resort was finally emailing my sister for advice and perhaps help and guidance that will help me. We aren't usually on the same page with a lot of things I will say that. I did not want her help before but there's no other way I can get my mind straight and figure things out, I am just not as organized as she is. Hopefully I'll get something out of the email.
